Do Championships Really Matter? So, March Madness is over. Should anyone (outside of those who won or lost money/pride/and such) really care who won?
I mean--if you win the 2011 NCAA Basketball Championship Whatever-it's-called that means that your team (who beat a lot of other teams) beat another team (who beat a lot of other teams) at a fixed point in time with a fixed amount of resources. The award is only valid for that snapshot in time.
Thus, however many times someone has won a championship, the championship held by a new player, or a previously won championship has no bearing on anything after that one point in time. It doesn't apply because things aren't equal.
It's like the Heracletian river--you're never really stepping in the same river because the flow of water and shape of the river is always changing (at least slightly) and thus isn't the same. This goes hand-in-hand with Leibniz's Law (look it up, it's interesting).
