Snowed in at Dani's HouseCLICK HERE for PHOTO ARCHIVEA few days ago while at work everyone was talking about how we here around the capital of North Carolina were about to be on the receiving end of a record breaking snowstorm. I for one was skeptical. Due to my fantastical northern weather detection skills I could tell snow was on the way. But enough to break records? I didn't think so. Nonetheless, when I got home I packed my bag with 3 extra changes of underwear, undershirts, 4 socks, and a change of regular attire plus jacket. As luck would have it, we didn't really break any records, but after work when I took David to go hang out at Dani's house it did start to snow, and by midnight there was a very thick dusting. For those of you not familiar with the way North Carolina works, they are not used to getting snow here. They are never prepared for it, and nobody knows how to properly drive on the stuff. I live in Apex, with is 30 minutes away from where I work, and about 40 minutes away from where Dani lives. I would have no problem driving on snowy, icy roads. But if there was one thing that last year's winter here taught me, was that nobody else here has my talent. Within 15 minutes there had been 36 car wrecks on the highway I would use to get back home. So needless to say I decided to stay the night. Thus began our snowy 4 day weekend at Dani's house. There were primarily four of us. David, Dani, Mary Alice, and myself. Victoria (Dani's mom), Dani's stepdad (his name escapes me), Christian (her brother) were also there too. Michael (another friend) was there on the night of the first snow, but had to leave and was then snowed in away from us. We spent our second day (the first day snowed in and all of us scheduled off work) playing in the snow, watching movies, then playing in the snow some more. We hooked up a saucer sled to the four-wheeler and dragged each other around the sub-division's unplowed roads, and generally just had a good time. The third day we were all scheduled to work, but there was no way we could get out of the sub-division and into Knightdale where we all work, so we had to all call in. Later we found out that they decided to close Best Buy that day. We all adventured out to their farm that afternoon with the sleds and found some decent hills to take advantage of too. The fourth day the snow had started to melt and the plows had cleaned up most of the main roads (although the sub-division's roads were still a mess). So I took David to work that morning then came back to Dani's house since I wasn't scheduled to go to work until 5:30 that afternoon. We cooked a pie, had breakfast, and then went out to sled at the farm one last time before it all melted. I picked David up from work and brought him back to the farm where we gathered everyone else who was still sledding. We went back to Dani's house until I had to go to work, and our snowy weekend officially came to a close. We took lots of photos, which you can all see in the provided link at the top of the page, and some videos. The videos will be edited into our first 2010 episode of 2G3. |
