Well, I think this deserves some discussion since Square saw such a large threat they decided to stop the team holding the project. It seems for a good time, some guys/gals got together to make a 3D Chrono Trigger that would look superb and help the nastalgic adjust with times. That is, until Square Enix, decided to get involved. Now the team had decided to stop for not wanting to pay for a lawsuit it seems. Their new webpage with the trailer of what would have been is found here. Who else wishes death to Enix now?
Nevermind that. I was surprised to see fans making a remake off the original Chrono Trigger, and I was even more surprised to see it look so good. I guess SquareEnix got scared and decided to kill the competition.
Looks quite Kingdom Heartsy. Pretty, though. I don't know whether I'd like to... death... Square Enix, though. They might give me a cease and desist order.
My bet is the team may indeed have gotten an offer, but this project was supposed to be free. What hurt even more I bet was it was from the company they were supposed to honor by doing so. I would keep a close eye on this team to see if they do indeed become competition to Square. Even though it was only a 3D remake, it was a sincerely promising one which most people couldn't even do.
Actually, I've read quite a few posts overall knowledgable of the subject on their forums. this in particular made a lot of sense. Next of all, I would consider them competition if I was SE since they have started turning out shit (Full Metal Alchemist game).
Umm... If I am not fully and completely mistaken, there is not nuts that SE can do about the remaking of a game... IF there is money being made, then they can have the game removed from the market... AS long as there is no money being made from the remaking of the game, then there is no marketable status and it makes it so that no one can do anything about it...
The reason I say this is, 1... Look at Ultima Online... It has been remade completely by many different, people, but none of them make a profit other than donations off of it... When OSI owned Ultima Online, they tried to sue the creators of the sphere emulator that allowed them to alter the game or run it as it was... It has also come to the point to where they have been able to pretty much recreate the game... OSI tried to sue, but lost because they were not making any money... As well... Sony tried to sue the people who made the Everquest emulator that allowed people to run a server off their own computer... That failed as well... There is another game out there as well that was completely remade, but when the company sued them... They failed miserably... AS LONG as you don't charge people for this game at all (NOT EVER SHIPPING FEES FOR GAME CDS!) then there isn't squat that they can do....
Another thing is... Think that it may not apply to cross referencing from one system to another system? Such as SNES to computer? Well... You have to see that they completely remade an Ultima Online shard after Dungeons and Dragons... TSR when they owned it tried to sue and failed...
Maybe this makes an opinion...
A lot of companies have done similar things in the past and lost. I'm guessing the development team felt more betrayed than anything else and probably said fuck them. Also they seem to have put a lot of talent into the rebuild as I said. It would not surprise me if they do end up getting a solid publisher to distribute their games and add competition. I'm guessing that you wouldn't believe someone may have the talent to be a Square rival, but this isn't the Square we once new either. Say hello to corperate fuck over Square....

First of all, thank you for calling me a mindless fanboy. Secondly: Knew. Knew. The Square we once KNEW.
I'm no stranger to how the world works.
And FMA is a SEnix production, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Ever hear of a typo? Jesus Christ, you miss one keystroke and get beat over the head for it. I just don't see how SE released that horrid FMA and the Broken Angel game is all I was saying. Square Enix seems to like to slap their label on anything that will bring them money....
To all of you whining that Square is the fucking devil:
That team had no right in using Chrono Trigger characters, sets, or plots. Would it of been cool? Yes. But it would of also been illegal.
SEnix was every much in the right.
Actually I was told that SquareEnix gave them the right to create a fanbased game, but they got scared when they saw how well the project was going, so they pulled the plug.
Actually, the project was running before the merger, after the merger, it was Enix that letter.
for the most part, it was the actual fear of their name being related to the project, even though they weren't making the project. It might also have something to do with the game being distributed as a demo on the PC, Xbox, and GC, but not the PS2.

Enix has been mainly a distributor for different developers. Most people seem to overlook that, but for example Valkyrie Profile was developed by Tri-Ace. I'm not sure if FMA or Broken Angel are from other companies or actually from SE, but it isn't a new concept for Enix putting their brand name on other developers games since they do distribute them.
Even if they didn't charge one cent for it, there are still problems. If it was a mod of the legitimate game, Square Enix could not touch it. However, since it was a stand alone version of the game that could replace the official version, it could be considered basically in the same light as if they were releasing the old version of the game for free. The Ultima Online and Everquest examples are misleading because both still require you to own the game to do it, and it is legal to modify programs you own as long as you do not distribute them with the alterations for profit.
Sure it might have been cool, and it certainly looked much better graphically than Chrono Cross did, but it doesn't look like there will ever be something like this.
No, I did that because I'm a lit major and it annoys me.
Where is the proof that FMA was made by the Chrono group? Because it looks the same?
I never said the FMA game was made by the Chrono group. Please state where in the hell I said that. As I was saying though, basically Enix is the problem IMO.
Okay, I got confused, but now this kind of makes it worse. You're saying that you're pissed off because SEnix shuts down production of this game AND makes crappy games?
More or less Enix rather than Square, but allowing production of such a shitty game should not be overlooked don't you think? I understand there's a corperate make money side to it and the dignified side of it, but come on -_-
I fail to see the relation between a company making a shitty game and shutting down a copyright violation (if it was actually being put on demo discs).
that looks like it would be an amazing game to play. i say we go on petitiononline.com and make a petition to get square enix to allow them to make it.
