DMC 3 was my first DMC-game I ever played, and I loved it. I finished it in various modes and bought myself the special edition so I could kick some ass with Vergil. Too bad, I didn't really had much chance to asswhoop some demons, because I suck with Vergil.
Anyway, I also played the first DMC after I finished 3. After playing 3, I thought Dante was moving slower, which he actually was, but it never really bothered me. I liked the story of it and of course the fighting style, but I preferred DMC 3 above DMC 1.
Now I've bought myself DMC 4 and boy that game was TOTALLY worth the money. I really like Nero's moves, it feels so good to be able to do so many different combo's just by integrating the busterarm into it. The story really rocks, but I do regret that I have more questions about Vergil and even Dante by Capcom bringing in Nero as a Bloodrelative of Sparda. Is he like, the 3th son? or a nephew or something? And what's up with the 'Give me more power' sentence? It made me think of Vergil being inside Nero's head or something like that. (You know, with Yamato giving Nero strenght n stuff)
So I love the DMC series and I hope I ever get the chance to play DMC 2, even though many people say it sucks, I want to play them all. I also hope that there will be another DMC about Vergil OR Sparda, maybe that'll clear all doubts about it.
Ditto. Devil May Cry 3 was my first of the games. After beating it I bought the Collection, and Beat Devil May Cry, a little cheesy but overall a good game. DMC2 I couldn't even go through the first stage, it was large and boring, I mean two discs for a PS2 game? A little much.
ya i heard that dmc2 was probly the worst of the series. the first one i played was the original and then i got reintroduced to it years later right before the 4th one came out. but in my opinion DMC3 is the best. Vergil is pure win.
I'm guessing they reached the point where they either a) had to acknowledge the existence of DMC 2 or b) reboot the entire franchise.
Really though, no matter how good the new game is, it is probably a bad overall decision. The biggest mistake is changing his hair. It's superficial, but even if Dante had exactly the same personality, characterization, and voice acting, a good number of people are going to take one look at him and go "they changed it so now it sucks."
There's no gameplay information out and the trailer and screenshots released so far are obviously out of context. I wouldn't be surprised if this does turn out to be a good game. It looks like Capcom was willing to put the time and money to properly have Dead Rising 2 developed and marketed, so there is a reasonable chance they will do the same for this game. I imagine people are complaining incessantly about the black hair though.
I suppose I should contribute my thoughts, since I brought it up and now I've seen the trailer.
I'll start with the fact that I never really cared all that much about DMC. I played the first three, and whatever I felt about the story, they were always fun. They weren't particularly engaging, the characters were over-the-top(owing to localization, no doubt), it was a mindless romp that knew what made it shine: style. It was a glistening anime-style beat-em-up that played to it's strengths which allowed it to ignore it's weaknesses. That was all well and good, but it didn't compel me to play the next generation because it occurred to me that millions of games do this well now. Dante was nice as a white-haired id when I was 14, but now I find him to be kind of an empty character and I don't remember caring that much about him beyond being an instrument of destruction.
Which winds quite nicely into how I feel about the change. This game is a prequel, and supposed to cover the youth of Dante(perhaps it will be when his hair changes color). And honestly, this guy gives the impression of what I imagine someone like Dante would've been like as a child: a "pretty" dude going through his goth phase and undoubtedly doing a bunch of whining before embracing what the average teenager probably sees as cool. However, right now there isn't a lot being told by the trailer or the picture, much less the developers. What draws me into this is basically two things:
1. A western developer(admittedly one obsessed with the east) working on this game may allow for stronger dialogue and characterization. Perhaps the shortcomings for DMC for me exist largely because it's trip across the sea was a little harsh on the ol' dialogue.
2. An attempt to shake up the image at all. Since I didn't care about Dante, perhaps this is their chance to make me give a crap. It seems largely unlikely, since he suffers from "Twilight" syndrome: the complete inability to be relateable because he is, ultimately, a pretty superhero who's suffering is largely ignorable since most of their problems seem to be of their making. But maybe the character won't be as melodramatic as his "Image brought to you by Hot Topic" look indicates. I guess it will be a while before we find out.
Anyway, Ditto point for Mattheau all the same: most superfans will probably be primed to gripe endlessly about the shade of red his jacket is, nevermind the very noticeable change in hair color. The danger in rebooting a beloved(for whatever reason) character of any franchise is alienating the "true believer"-types.
