I read my first Discworld book -actually the second in the series - when I got it from my library and haven't missed one since. Pratchett is one of the few authors I buy in hardback.
i love this series! the last continent has to be one of my favourites. i have read most of them and not one has disappointed me yet. they manage to have great depth and yet be hilarious at the same time. Rincewind is one of the best characters ever. and the whole city watch were just great.
In short, there are links for pretty much each of the books. There are quotes and page references (many of them from Terry Pratchett himself) that explain some of the thousands of jokes and references that he has incorporated into his series.
For those that want a better explanation and history of the APF, you can go to the introduction.
That's definately easier (and cheaper) than purchasing the approx. 30 books he has in the series.
However, since I've read all my books in the series at least twice (some of the earlier ones more than a dozen times) I've felt the expenditure was well worth it.
A good place to check would be in used book shops... In fact, a good place for any set of books that have been around for a long time...
Easier and cheaper prehaps, but I'm an avid reader. It hurts to know there's more books by an author I like and I can't read them because the libraries either don't have all of them or don't have them at all. X.X
The secret is to get a parent addicted to the books and then have he/she buy the lot of them for him/herself. Buy one or two a leave them surreptitiously on tables next to favorite lounge chairs or on the back of the toilet. Worked wonders for me (I found best success with "Pyramids" and "Reaper Man")
I love the Discworld books. While I'm here, I might as well pimp out my Discworld Fan Fic... :) Here. It's my first thing I've actually written, completed, and been happy with... so... yeah. It was for a writing course I took a little while back.
I really enjoy the Discworld series, especially any with Ridcully or the City Watch. I think I have managed to read the entire series up to Going Postal Terry, get off your ass and put out another book.
Just for shits and giggles my freinds and I came up with a partial Discworld casting list for most the main characters.
I started reading Terry Pratchett about 3 years ago with The Fifth Elephant. Odd one to start on, I know, but thankfully one of my coworkers was very near obsessed and loaned me others of his books that summer. I've read all of the Discworld up through Monstrous Regiment. I know, I still need to get n Going Postal, but I am a college student here. ^_^;;
Favorite books include Soul Music (because I'm a music nerd) and Night Watch as well as The Wee Free Men and A Hat Full of Sky. Gotta love the Nac Mac Feegle. ^_^ And I've successfully gotten my roommate to read Discworld! She started with Thief of Time and has since finished Equal Rites and is working on Small Gods.
So my question to you all is this: Who is your favorite character from each of the "groups"?
Like for me, my favorite witch is Granny Weatherwax, Watchman is Carrot, wizard is Ponder Stibbons, and member of the Death (Sto Helit) family is Death, followed closely by Susan. ^_^
I have only read one of Pratchett's books and that was Masquerade. It was grand because I am a thespian, and love Phantom of The Opera. He is a good writer, not the best, but good. My favorite character is DEATH. Because he types in all caps. Good times.
I absolutely love Vimes in Night Watch! Though...does anyone know what the "ginger beer trick" really is? That part has really kinda confused me for a long time.

Ahh, but the question is which Vimes in Night Watch? The young Vimes or the old Vimes?
Old Vimes. I mean, Sam is interesting in that you can see how he grows at least partially into Vimes, but Vimes is just so...awesome. I can't think of other words to describe him. ^_^
Sam Vimes is one of the most awesome characters that Pratchett made, in my opinion. He's simply badass at times, but he still works out awesomely in the books because somehow Pratchett made it so that he doesn't steal too much of the reader's attention, you know what I'm saying?
And Artemischan, the ginger beer trick was just that, a trick. They would go out of sight with someone, open up the bottle, do something to make the drink make noise before hand, and then start screaming bloody murder. It would make the guy they were trying to trick think awful things about what the hell they were doing to the guy they took. Awesome idea, in my opinion. ^^
Yes, but the way it was presented in Night Watch it sounded like there was more to it. I mean, Vimes and Colon didn't actually do anything to their prisoners, but the prisoners thought they'd be doing something to them. You know what I mean? It felt like there'd be some kind of torture method like was described that Vimes didn't do.
I own all first ed UK hardbacks from Men at Arms and am currently trying to complete my back collection. Which is expensive as they are averaging about £40 on eBay. Although a minter Colour of Magic went for about £10K...
Sam Vimes is fantastic. Especially as Pratchett himself admits he was only ever intended to be a bit part character in Guards! Guards! and it was Carrott who was supposed to be the main protagonist.
Favourite book is still Mort, followed by any book with the Witches in it. Granny is awesome. I remember the first one I read. I was 16 and I'd borrowed Equal Rites from the library to take on holiday on the Norfolk Broads with me. Sniggering was the order of the day...
