I really doubt the population of America will back that. America's intelligence community will find a large sleeper cell of Islamic terrorist in Columbia. Ofcourse....what they wont say is that they relocated them there.

yes there is. From what I read (and no, I cant recall where) the majority of South America is sitting of some vast oil reserves. Something about the carbon from all the life that has been in the rain forest over the last millenia turning into vast regions of oil.

What do you think they've got an undisclosed number of detainees in Gitmo for? Drop a few of them in a place you'd like to invade, "capture" them after bombing the bejeezus out of the offending country, then declare victory, it's win-win.

Oh, right, I forgot about that. But I guess that's what you can do with the leftovers, keep having the odd one "escape" and repeat the cycle as needed.

But you can, however, declare "Mission Accomplished" years before the mission ends.

Actually the only significant amount of oil reserves is the Orinoco Belt, which consists of a lot of offshore deposits and Venezuela. That's about it. Offshore drilling has its own problems and as for Venezuela, well...

Oh yeah, there are definitely more than just the Orinoco, but that's the most cost effective one, especially considering how jacked up the situation is (financial and otherwise) in all of those countries save Brazil.

Well the US can't legalize drugs, or the prisons will stop being profitable. That's just common sense.

It seems to me, if we made the people that run the prisons into marijuana farmers, they could switch industries and keep their pockets lined with green (pun intended), no? :)

It's your body, you should be able to treat at as you wish, if you want to slowly kill yourself through drug abuse, go ahead, but you must accept all responsibility for your actions when you are under the influence of anything. It should definitely be legalized, it could be taxed, easily, and it would also keep people out of prisons, people are using up tax payer money for trying to control their own lives, it's not really fair to be put in prison for something like marijuana.

I'm fairly certain he's referring to the same way cigarettes and alcohol (as well as other controlled substances) are taxed.

Yeah, I know, I'm just referring to the way people are fully able to grow their own without having to buy anything but some growing equipment and a few seeds.

Maybe make it so people have to have a permit to grow?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonshining

Same basic concept. You tax something via permit, and people will get around it. The only problem is growing marijuana is far easier.

Refer to my last sentence. The only reason moonshining isn't as prevalent as it could be is that it takes quite a bit of know-how, equipment, and a lot of trial and error to get started. Marijuana on the other hand, requires little to no equipment and can be grown practically anywhere.

In reply to S1apSh0es, #1915:

Still not all that relevant. If people want to grow it without permits and they get caught, then that's that. If they don't, whatever, it's not like they could use the stuff they grow for wide distribution.

And I don't think our basis for choosing not to make laws or regulations should be "Don't bother, someone can get around it." Kind of pointless, people can get around anything.

I suppose, but it's a personal issue, so do whatever. I still think it's wrong for people to be imprisoned for something so trivial, and for thousands of people to die every year.

We were hiking on Kauai anda couple of us noticed a kind of funny smell in the woods. We asked one of our guides about it and he told us people grow marijuana hidden out in the woods and just go and gather it from there. I'm guessing that stuff would probably be pretty good, given the volcanic soil and all that.

Edit: Just note, this story really has nothing to do with the issue. It was just interesting at the time.
