I wasn't able to find anything like this in the forums which surprised me a bit. I'm a 2nd year graduate student in Technical Direction for theatre and I know griffon just received a degree in theatre as well. I'm sure we aren't the only two on here that work in this industry.

This thread is meant to post pictures of your ORIGINAL work that you've done in theatre. It doesn't matter what you did for the show. If you've designed/worked on lighting, scenery, costumes, props, special effects and the like, this is the place to show off your stuff. Anybody that works in this business knows how important it is to keep a portfolio to show off your work. Think of this as an opportunity to potentially be seen. Just keep in mind that if you didn't have a hand in it, you should not be posting it and is completely unacceptable.

Also it IS acceptable to discuss images that have been posted but any extended conversations should be taken elsewhere. Questions about what you see are by all means welcome. This is NOT the place to discuss other theatre topics that don't pertain to the pictures posted.

This show is Sweeney Todd and I was the Asst. Lighting Designer and the Asst. Technical Director, done my senior year of undergrad at the University of Northern Iowa. We used over 320 conventional lighting instruments and toured the set from our regular theatre down the road to the much bigger Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on campus.

This thread is relevant to my interest. Though my budget is clearly a small fraction of yours.

Here are some pics from The Regulars, the last show i directed with the company Hobo Junction:

Here are two i could find from The Temp. I was not directly involved with this one, but i'm a member of the company, so i think it's kosher:

Those are some great pics, though not all good theatre has large budgets. Some of the best stuff I've seen was low key. Large budgets weren't the norm for me when I did Sweeney Todd, that was just an exception because of the circumstances. Larger budgets are more normal for my current grad school but even still, they aren't always effective.

Here's a few pics from Turn of the Screw, one of the shows I was Technical Director for at the Summer stock company at my grad school this year. It was a simple set with a couple of platforms, some curtains hanging and a couple of fog effects.

Oh no doubt. Sometimes a limited budget means an unlimited imagination. Or so I like to tell myself. The show I'm directing now is going to actually have a set, which I'm excited about. Along with a five piece orchestra, and a bunch of the performers are from the Lyric Opera, so there's an abundance of talent, which is great. Not to say that Hobo Junction isn't overwhelmingly talented, it's just that they also tend to be overwhelmingly drunk.

Here's a few pictures from a show i Assistant Directed on. It was called "The Brother" and it was directed by John. D. Hancock of "Bang the Drum Slowly" fame.

I'm going to have to check out these plays. I don't think I've ever heard of them before.

All of them are new. The Artistic Director of Hobo Junction is a very talented playwright, so we mostly perform his comedies. The Temp is an office comedy where all the office machines talk to the employees. Bad Guys in Suits is a jazz/vaudeville comedy about gangsters from the thirties having a bad day, and The Regulars is a spoof on war dramas set in the back room of a restaurant. The Brother was adapted from a book about the Rosenbergs for the stage by John Hancock, with an eye on possibly turning it into a film.

Those all sound great. You're in the Chicago area? Hell I should ask around and see if anyone I know is familiar with that company. I'm in Champaign just a couple hours South of there.

These are all great! If I didn't know better, I'd say they were all professional, Broadway type sets. Excellent work!
