The third book is awesome. Since the amount of material Martin wanted to cover for the 4th book required writing two books, books 4 and 5 deal with people in the south and the north respectively, with Arya Stark being the exception.
I found the 4th to only be okay, but that had more to do with the fact I don't really care for the those characters as much than anything else. The 5th book comes out this summer!
I'm far enough along on my re-read to be past where the first episode ends, so I can probably stay just ahead of the series. What I really need to make sure happens is I finish the series re-read for July 12th
I'll have to either wait for the Blu ray or hope each episode is released on iTunes because I'm not getting HBO for just one show... even if it looks like it will be the best drama on TV in years.
Apparently if you live in the States HBO is free this weekend on most cable subscribers, that's from Martin. About an hour now! Too bad I have to go to bed shortly, stupid working at 5:30. Going to DVR it and watch tomorrow though.

I just finished watching the first episode. I have to stream it, being in Australia and all, but god it's good. I've actually not read the books either, so I'm not having any issues with the dialogue.
I was a bit taken aback by the nudity and language, then I remembered I was watching an HBO show.
most of the sex scenes will have existed in the book those that don't will still fit in the character(Tyrion's in "Winter is Coming"). The Dothraki scenes were right right right from the book. Including the description of the preferred Dothraki style, taking the women like horses. Expect plenty more the women use sex as a weapon, since they cannot fight conventionally.
I'm not sure whether or not I should read the books now that the series has started. I almost want to keep it spoiler free and watch the series exclusively. What do ya'll suggest?
I don't know. I sort of hate knowing what will happen before it does. It definitely detracts from the value of the TV series. If you've all read the book then post in here when the series goes past the end of it and I'll read. I think that's a good idea.
Book 1 will be finished at the end of season 1. Season 2 is going to be adapted from A Clash of Kings, which is the second book of a Song of Ice and Fire.
ya i like episode one but i loved episode 2, episode one suffered from them trying to introduce all the characters in a hour, they probably should have made it a hour and a half just so it would have a similar pace because episode 2 was brilliant. I wasnt so sure about Tyrion in the first one but after episode two hes my favorite character. and Joffrey is a little shit
The Kingsroad was great, I noticed a few more deviations from the Novel but nothing significant, just little things if I'm being nit picky. The was one scene that while in, I don't think it captured the feeling of the book, and that was when Jon went to say goodbye to Bran with Lady Stark there. While you get the immediate sense of dislike towards Jon from here, she doesn't give him the hateful lashing in the book where she blames him for everything and says she has prayed it was him who lay there dying. I really wish they kept that intact, but thats really only a minor gripe.
The end is so heart breaking from the start of the episode knowing the what would happen to Ayra and Sansa's Direwolves was just so heart breaking. I teared up when Ayra had to drive Nymeria away
I think the moment between Jon Snow and Lady Stark was great, not perfect, but I can live with it. I also like how they established the tension between them in the first episode with a only few words and looks, so I think adapting the rant would redundant. Especially when they have so much to get through in a single season and I fear we might miss out on some really great stuff. However, I have read some of the synopses for the upcoming episodes, and it seems like they'll do this book justice when it comes to story.
I've really enjoyed it so far. I will agree that the first episode was a little dull, but considering it was only an hour long that's to be expected. They had to get through a lot of introductions in the first episode. The second episode was great. I agree that the end scene with Ned and Lady was gut wrenching. It doesn't help that my parents have a mushing dog from Alaska that looks almost identical to the dogs they're using as the direwolves; not as big, but the same face and coloring.
I ordered HBO just for this series, so it's been great to see that they're doing as good of a job as they are. It's not perfect, but nothing is. What I'm really looking forward to is how they intend to show the events that occurred at the Tower of Joy . That has the potential to be an amazing scene especially if they show Ned and Howland Reed fighting their way up to Lyanna . I don't think I'm giving away anything by saying all that, but I'll but it on spoiler just in case.
I just thought of something odd that I wanted those who have read the books opinion on in regards to what may be a deviation.
So in the books its said that Cersei was in love with Robert until the moment he shouted Lyanna's name on their wedding night. She's also stated that anytime he may have gotten her pregnant she has consumed a Potion to induce a miscarriage. So when she confesses to Catelyn her first born died and was the spitting image of Robert, was she telling the truth in TV Universe or was she simply being manipulative Cersei?
It's been a while since I read the first book so...
I think the story about her and Robert is true in the television universe, but it just hasn't been brought up yet. And I wouldn't put it past Cersei to make up a lie just to manipulate Catelyn and see how she reacts. Or this may be true and be one of the many deviations they'll make to series to keep it fresh and new for the readers. Not sure if you've seen this yet, but they've released a short video about Cersei: Cersei Character Feature. It helps give a little more background on this version of her.
It will be interesting to see what her justification is for the Incest and birth of Joff and his siblings. I did really like it though that when she described her "son" he was quintessentially Baratheon, and the Image of Robert, just like the all his bastards. I think perhaps that may lend credence to the "son" acctually existing at least to me. My thinking is if it was a lie, wouldn't it serve her better to blend the Baratheon/Lannister traits.
I'm a little confused by your last sentence, I'm probably misreading it..
If her story were true, may be at that time she did still love Baratheon. However, no matter the reason, they still drifted apart. And after watching Baratheon turn to whoring and drinking, I'm pretty sure she didn't want her future children to be related to him by blood, but only by name to get the crown. Would you rather "blend" your children with a fat, drunkard king or a handsome, well-trained kingsguard man? Of course, during the war, Baratheon was awesome, but when you look at him now, you can't help but wonder what happened.
Read a couple reviews and apparently they are trying to stick to the books as much as possible.. I was hooked within the first 10 minutes. It is one of those shows I found you are disappointed when it ends. You just want more.. and apparently so does everyone else.. Awesome that within 48 hours of the first episode it has already been signed for a second season.
I am really interested to see how each character develops as the season progresses . I too was upset and found the scenes with the loss of Ayra and Sansa's Direwolves was just so heart breaking. Sean Bean was so awesome in the scene you could really feel his remorse in having to kill Joy.
Yeah, I just re-read what I posted there, I should stop posting when I am distracted by a hockey game. It boils down to this if she was lying about having the child, it would have served her better to describe it with a few Lannister traits. It could help keep Joff more secure in terms of parentage.
I was also musing about what the straw that broke the camel's back was, in terms of Cersei falling out of love with Robert, there is always a moment.
I'm not sure we will see the Tower of Joy until Howland Reed tell Jon his parentage. Ned only ever thinks about it, he never talks about it, I'm not sure how well the flashback would work in terms of moving the story of A Game of Thrones along. It makes more sense for him to mention the Tower, and the promise he made to his sister. I hope I am wrong though and we do get to see it.
I feel like I should of mentioned this earlier but a lot of the spoiler tagged stuff is book spoilers, which go far far beyond a couple episodes down the line.
