I think we've all heard stories about girls going on XBox Live and getting harassed non-stop (if you listen to the Podcast you've at least heard Burnie's tales of his adventures with the Frag Dolls, which are not nearly as sexy as they sound). My question is: Have you ever been in a game on Live and someone - on your team, the other team, their own team, whatever - announced that they were a girl and then got harassed for it?

I honestly don't think I've ever been in a situation like that; I've been in a couple games where one guy will jokingly hit on her for a minute or two in the lobby and then we all get down to killing each other as nature intended, but I've never seen the actual harassment; the internet is still the only place I've heard the "get back in the kitchen and make me a sammich" line.

What about you guys? Share your (horror) stories of XBox Live.

I have a girl gamer as a friend. It's funny because all the guys are trying to talk to her, trying to put the moves on her. It was funny. But I was playing with a girl yesterday and she was pretty cool. But none of the guys were harassing her. It just the mindset of men.

Back when I played Halo 3, I got paired up with two girls and every dude was hitting them. The girls muted everyone besides me and my friend. We actually had a very funny conversation with them. Making fun of the dudes who were hitting on them was one of my funniest memories on xbox live.

TBH, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you.

I play with a few girls on xbl, and I have never witness one bit of harassment towards them...
The only harassment I have ever seen myself have been people to little kids who are playing halo/cod/etc....
But that's entirely different.

Yeah I'm essentially in the same situation you are in.

I did however witness something pretty peculiar I was playing MW2 with a group of my friends and we got paired with this Xbox live couple and there friends, they had matching bio's and everything. I was staying quite but my friends were harassing them like crazy. Telling them that they are so cute together and how the girl should suck they're dicks. It was something alright.

My friend tends to play with my in Xbox Live and surprisingly enough, she gets harassed by other girls, but most of the time she verbally beats the crap out of them after winning the match. There's also the occasional guy that bothers her, but she deals with them the same way.

I've never personally seen it happen but I have seen videos.

On a side note, I recently got ponify on chrome, and it makes this thread rather amusing, although, I do feel bad for all the fillies being harassed by the stallions on xbox & other stuff of that nature.

While it's not Xbox Live, I have seen it a lot in Counter-Strike: Source.

I used to be an admin/mod developer on a server in CS:S which was packed 24/7 for almost 4 years straight. We banned a lot of boys for harassing female players. To put it in perspective, most common reason for banning was cheating, second most common was harassment, and the most common forms of harassment were sexual harassment and racism. At least 90% of the sexual harassment bans were boys harassing female players. Keep in mind I use the term boys because that's what they were acting like, but a good amount of those sounded like grown men.

Don't see it as often now that I'm not an admin on a CS:S server, but I do still see it all too often.

I have to admit that while it is the funniest thing ever when guys try to hit on a girl and fail miserably. I feel bad that girls have to be on the look out for creepers harassing them on xbox live. I mean it isn't as bad as our mind portrays it, Seagulls flocking on a bag of Doritos, but any bit of harassment still sucks.

I usually try to make friends with girls on xbl, they are usually way better than the boys and they are more pleasant to listen to through the headset.

I get harassed all the time on xbox live...
My favorite was "You're a girl? you must be UGLY and a FAT WHORE!" I get that a lot, makes me feel oh so special knowing that I am not. Others try to "mack" on me which is even weirder... or the constant tea bagging in Halo... or being called a 10 year old boy... oh the list goes on! //sigh//
I have had multiple guys defend me as well, so thanks to the valiant men who do so!

I've never really seen any comments towards females as I generally do not enjoy listening to Xbox Live game chat. I just stay on Skype with friends and mute incoming microphone chatter on my Xbox. Some of my friends, who are female and play video games (I think the term "girl gamer" is just stupid) don't ever seem to get harassed though, probably because they do the smart thing and don't use in-game chat.

its kinda sad that girls dont want to use the game chat for that reason, but i know this situation.

people react very different to females playing.i think the view of girls and videogames changed in the last years. it s not soo unusual anymore to meet a girl online. but i also know situatons were i was faced with aggression and harassment, like Kaoru27Umi just said: beeing called fat ugly bitch, has no friends and plays videogames because im sad about my life, or i´m a annoying boy and all that stuff ( i have to say that my own teammembers said this, first they were like:wow, good kill, dude. ...till they noticed the difference)

i dont think it is such a difference if a man or a woman is playing.i dont see a reason to be unnecessary mean because that is a man/woman/older person/different countries (my father made some nice epxerences with insults in languages he cant understand-asking me what the message means, not something you want to translate)

No, I haven't really seen girls getting flamed. If anything I've noticed they get special attention because the guys get really excited over the concept of a girl gamer, though I don't doubt it happens sometimes. I don't give it any second thought, I don't care if you're a girl, I'm just there to play a game.

I have a good hand full of chicks on my friends list, so i've heard some harassment. many to one in particular, but her GT has banana in it so.... well you guys can guess that bit. she just mutes em if they go there. the only other time i've heard any was a long time ago I had a friend who was about 12 i wanna say, there were other people (her age) who would make sexual jokes, but she didn't understand then, and I made sure to the best of my ability she wouldn't find out what the jokes were, people can really be jerks. Most of all though, I find guys trying to help out any girls in the game, even if it causes them to loose, trying to get on her good side / impress her.

most of the harassment i see is when they hear a girls higher pitched voice they initially think its a little kid and mock her for that but they usually shutup when she tells them otherwise

It really does depend on what game you are playing. For instance, if you are playing COD, I have seen girls harassed in Search Lobbies on every COD game I own. But when I play Assassin's Creed Multiplayer, when it is publicly announced that there is a girl in the lobby, people respect that and just go on with their business.

It is basically related to the demographics of the game...

Occasionally I play against girls, but I don't think I've ever found a situation like that.

it all depends on who you playing with, you forget a lot of people on xbox live are total assholes that have nothing better to do

While that can be true it should be noted that those people are still in the minority. Most people are nice, over 14 and just want to have a fun time.

I would not say most. When I play any popular multiplayer game, there are plenty of little kids, jerks, and people who just want to make you mad (umadbro?)... yeah, I'd say it's split, half are good fun people, the others just make it suck.

No no no. You only really notice the people who are being assholes because those are the people who stand out to you. They leave way more of an impression on you than the guy who showed up in a lobby, said nothing and went very positive.
