I know, I'm not saying they can't be dicks back. Guys just don't want to start anything with girls generally. That's all I'm saying. I know some girls who are dicks while playing video games as well. It is just a little different saying something along the lines of "Gavin, you're a fucking idiot!" to a girl... Maybe that's just me. Idk.
I hope that's just you. I think the idea that all girls have fragile emotions that need to be protected is utter bullshit.
I wish I could pull my friend Tyler into this conversation...he would tell you stories of how I degrade him on a weekly basis. But he lacks a spine, so he may not be able to say anything actually.
Also, my friend Alysia is FAR crueler to her friends (ie: ME) than I think anyone at AH has been to anyone else.
So yeah. I think people who pigeon-hold people (genders, sexes, races, etc) to stereotypes need to reevaluate their life.
I can only apologise because I was brought up to hold woman in a light of respect and taught that hitting or degrading women was the height of shame. The name time you accidently get your words mixed up or say something stupid I'll make sure to punch you in the mouth and insult your life's work.
From your wording and context, it sounded like you were saying that it was OKAY to be an ass to a guy but not to a girl, because she's a girl. I inferred a reason someone would resign from teasing a girl--and I apologize for jumping to a conclusion about your motives so quickly.
There is so many things wrong with that that I don't even know where to begin...
Allow me to point out, first, that being "especially nice to girls because they're girls" doesn't make you any better than a guy who degrades us. If I succeed at something, it better damn well be because I did a fine job. If I use the wrong word, call me out on it. If I say something stupid, call me out on it. (Hell, look above you in this forum! Irishrocker did exactly that when I made an unfair generalization about him, minus punches and insults.)
So while I don't want you to "punch [me] in the mouth and insult [my] life's work," if that is how you react every time someone--man or woman--messes up...well, my internet comrade, then you have other issues at hand other than sexism, but sexism is still included on the list. You SHOULD have been raised that hitting or degrading any human being is a shameful act. Am I to understand that if you were gay that it would be A-OKAY for you to beat up and degrade your boyfriend? Or maybe your son? Or your father? Or your best guy friend? That's okay, right? Because they're not women?
If you treat one sex one way, and another sex another way, it is sexist. It is unequal treatment.
And for the record, I won't accept your "apology"--hell, I wasn't even that angry or upset at your viewpoint until you felt you needed to "apologize" to me. Your comment about the movie industry was a valid point about the heighten sexual appeal of many movies/actors/characters and I agreed with that in my response. I only added that women actors have their appearance scrutinize more often then men. I don't see how that warranted a sarcastic, sexist remark.
However, since you (still talking referring only to SheltonUK) and I cannot have a thoughtful discussion about why I was curious as to why there weren't any female gamers on AH and how there could be because you cannot take my opinions seriously as a viewer of this community, you can kindly stop watching this thread and move along because I am done talking to you.
Does anyone know if there were any recent female interns? I really have no idea, to be fair to AH and RT, how many applications they get, the demographics, and how the selection process even works...
A lot of people are brought up like that, I was brought up thinking girls were weak and there opinions didn't matter, lol. I've met my fair share of girls who'd kick my arse.
It's not that you should be horrible cruel, it's that if you would do it to a guy in a certain situation, you should be able to do it to a girl in the same situation too.
In reply to Allec, #38: It's a little unfair to get angry or show hatred to Skelton, for the reason that to try and make someone see the way you see is excellent but if you get angry then that message is nothing more than a challenge. Sorry if that offends you, I'm just trying to help.
I do not see in the same light because not everyone is the same and that goes for girls and guys. We're two different beings and whilst we deserve equality to a certain extent I believe trying to make both completely on even grounds is stupid. I want women to have equal rights to men. Things like voting and pay and work opportunities but I do not agree to things like unisex sports as it's been shown to not work already. Women and men are always going to be treated differently we need to get over this hurdle. It's not going to change. What we need to make sure we do is that women and men are treated equally where it would affect your life. Not get pissy because someone would punch/abuse one and not the other. It's stupid and it's childish.
The argument tires me. The apology was not sincere and neither was the rest of the message but anyone clever enough could've spotted that. What is rather unfitting for the topic is your negativity and way of challenging anyone who disagrees with your opinion. I was referring to Achievement Hunter with my last post. If you've ever actually taken the time to watch any of it. Gavin often messes things up or plays pranks to which Jack will pick him up by the neck and slam him into the floor or slap him in the face or stealhis shoes and beat him with them. Now had the same been done to Barbara I'd imagine someone might have gotten fired.
I have agreed with many of your opinions and whilst anyone fighting for womens equality is working on an admirable cause, you are going about it all the wrongs ways. You are specifically looking for female employees and finding fault because there are none or very little. This is not an admirable cause. This is you making the presumption that they do not employ women or at the very least enquiring as to why they don't and then looking past the answer to find out why they don't employ women for AH.
If you're curious to find out why there are no female gamers on AH? The men were better at the job they did and they worked the hardest to get the placement. Some men worked harder than other men to get the placement too, whether it be in creativity, humour, level of skill or a combination of them all. To simply get a girl on board because they lack female co-workers is a ridiculous idea and is not demonstrating equality. When the right candidate comes up I'm sure they will get them on board, regardless of sex.
We are two different beings lol. Trying to make both on completely even ground is stupid, so it's right that in our society some can have better advantages due to gender? No one's saying that it should be Completely even, just fair. Maybe people get 'pissy' because it does directly effect them and obviously you have no consideration for others feelings if you say that it's stupid and childish to stand up to sexism no matter how big or small. Allec isn't challenging anyone who disagrees with her. She's challenging you for being ignorant.
Jack, Gavin, Michael and who ever else hurt each other because that's in their personality, however Barbra isn't like that from what I've seen. I doubt that Gavin would slap anyone for no reason if they weren't a person who'd do something like that themselves whether they're male or female.
I'm not sure but didn't we establish why they're weren't many women on AH ages ago? I think I miss spelled or miss placed stuff there, if I have I'm sorry, it's just I'm really tired. :P
Did you even read what I posted? I said that we should focus on providing men and women with the equalities that matter. What I also said was that we should stop focusing on these silly things. I also wasn't being ignorant, I was being incredibly sarcastic because she was being incredibly tastless with her insults towards someone who said they treated women with a bit more respect than they would their buddies. It's not a crime to be chivalrous but apparently it requires a reevaluation of your life.
Barbara has a very similar personality to the AH guys but it'd still be out of line to treat her in the same fashion that the rest of the AH Office treat each other and a lot of people would feel the same way. And yes, the reason as to why there's no women on AH was discussed and agreed on yesterday.
You might think they're 'silly little things' but to someone who's effected by it, it can be much bigger. You are being ignorant, arrogant and sexist. You should probably just leave this thread now as this a little off topic.
Was it not you that said "no one is saying it should be completely equal" ?
I'm not being ignorant, arrogant nor sexist, it is your view of the 3 that is wrong. Nothing I have said thus far has been sexist. I am not discriminating against womens rights nor am I saying we should treat them without respect or equality. I will treat every human being on this earth differently regardless of age, gender or race. We are not all the same and it is this fact alone that defines our everything. I will not treat someone how they wish to be treated but how they deserve to be treated. Now do I think all women should be kitchen dwelling slaves to men? No. Just the same as guys can have what is often looked upon as a womans job and it's be fine by me. We all deserve equal opportunity but that doesn't mean to say I'm going to treat a girl the exact same as a guy nor a guy as a girl automatically.
Getting upset because there are no women performing a particular job at one company (most likely because they didn't apply or were rejected in favour of better candidates) is silly. To then say "well if they tried hard enough they would find a girl capable of working there" is also incredibly stupid, especially considering the basis of your argument which is equality. Specifically looking for a female (who may not even be good enough for the job in the first place) just to have a girl on the team is probably one of the most insulting things the company could do. So long as they aren't specifically looking only for men to apply and are accepting only the best candidates there is no gender discrimination.
Whilst it would be nice to see a girl being a part of achievement hunter it'd be nice not because she's a girl but because she's talented, funny and/or good at her job. The topic is a very sticky one that some people like to use to sit on a moral high ground and usually it is their perception of the topic that causes such arguments.
Will I treat men and women differently? Yes. Just like I would usually only ask a few male friends of mine if they wanted to go see a football match because I don't expect any of my female friends to be up for it. If I did however know that a few of them do I would also invite them.
This is much the same as I wouldn't expect to be asked if I'd like to come over and have my nails done. Simply because it's not expected for a guy to have his nails done. If you somehow manage to justify that as sexism there's a problem here and it's most likely you.
My fiance and I both do the Mod Spotlight series together, our group for suggesting maps/mods and watching all of the videos is here . We try to post videos weekly, however life gets in the way sometimes (like this past weekend).
SheltonUK, go away. I am not going to answer you and I advise everyone else in this forum to ignore you as well.
But thank you HelloIAmDrew for trying to help me out, but this troll won't shut up.
In reply to cfhhateph34r, #48: Thanks for sharing!
In reply to Papasmurf531, #49: That's true. But sometimes the bias is NOT intentional. In actuality, it can be difficult to impossible to separate bias and objectivity unless someone is very, very aware of it.
While discrimination can be hard to identify, take a look at this article from Princeton. This article relates to discrimination in orchestras, where putting up a blind that prevented the judge from seeing the musician but allowed them to hear the musician impacted the results on who was accepted into the orchestra.
Here's a quote from the Princeton article: "Among musicians who auditioned in both blind and non-blind auditions, about 28.6 percent of female musicians and 20.2 percent of male musicians advanced from the preliminary to the final round in blind auditions. When preliminary auditions were not blind, only 19.3 percent of the women advanced, along with 22.5 percent of the men."
The auditions are meant to recruit based solely on talent, yet when there were not blinds, women were recruited less than men than when the blinds were used. That says something towards what was intended and what actually happened.
This obviously cannot be implemented into every career. Yet, I wonder at the application process AH and RT use for their interns? I sincerely do not know.
I get that "talent is all that matters" but there can be something said for diversifying the media out there, definitely when there could be talent equal to or greater than who has been recruited by RT and AH that we do not see because of unintentional bias. Also, hiring a female gamer to do videos with AH can help women out there who are discriminated against as not serious, compete gamers. Which, in the end, is what I am aiming to solve.
I think it would be interesting if AH did hire a female gamer, it would be fun to see what kind of dynamic the males would have, from what we have seen the few women of RT are quite humorous and work well with the men. If a girl wanted to get into AH the best way would be to have vids up, of good quality, with tasteful and witty community.
You said you don't listen to the RT podcast, I really recommend it, I started late round 140. I downloaded all from Itunes, listen to them all and enjoined them all. (plus they are free :D )
Agh. If I had an adept computer to edit videos with...
Also, I need to catch up! I've listened to the podcasts here and there, but I feel like I have to listen from the start @_@ I'll definitely get them on iTunes though. That way I can listen to them while out walking muahaha.
That MAY be true, but with Ali being introduced in the newest AHWU: it seems clear to me that you just happen to know girls who casually play rather than competitive.
Also, what do you mean by competitively? Whenever I play a game, I'm being competitive. I don't care if it's the first or thousandth time I've played: I'm competitive by my nature.
Do you have personal experience to back up that assessment?
I'm not saying these girl gamers don't exist, but that they're a dime a dozen. i.e.
most gamer girls play casually rather than competitively
Shopping, school, makeup, boys. that's where a large percentage of females competitive industry is in. to them, a game is just a game. Not a sport. There's a reason why the world industry mostly covers only male sports.
where the few industries where females reign there is just beach volleyball. And that's partially because sex sells
AH is a competitive field. I personally don't need women here to spice things up unless they meet the roster. It's just not there...yet. Just look at SKorea's starcraft industry. That's probably the only industry in which gamer girls are plentiful in a competitive field
"Shopping, school, makeup, boys" I'm sorry... but that is highly offensive to me! (and I'm sure other girls agree with me on that one) women know how to be competitive too... whether that be sports, gamers, whatever! seriously... women are be just as competitive as men in every field they can be, I'm really uncertain where you're getting your facts from sir... just because we aren't "as strong" as men in certain areas, no offense, but men aren't "as strong" in certain areas against women either and I'm not talking about shopping and makeup!
I'm not arguing the competitive side, K. I apologize if that's your impression. My "facts" are just opinions, in both business and investments between multiple countries.
I'm just saying there's a reason this industry's swarmed with males. That's all
If you can show me the proprietorial positioning in which I as an investor can somehow move more women into the competitive gaming space, please, enlighten.
The vanity industry for women is much larger than for men. And likewise the porn industry has a larger clientele for men, no? That's all I'm saying. I don't see a significant proportion of competitive female gamers vs. male gamers.
