In less than 24 hours I will be under general anesthetic as some guy drills, hammers, and uses plastic explosives to bust out my 4 wisdom teeth. I know it's going to suck ass. I picked up my three bottles of prescription meds last night (one of which was not covered by my insurance and cost me $40 for only 4 pills, WTF?).

Anyways, I want everyone to share their pain. Lets here everyones worst stories dealing with Teeth Removal.

My grandfather already told me about his wisdom teeth removal. He had it done when he was my age by his friend who was a dentist. He said his job was to sit at a desk with is elbow on the desk and his hand supporting is Jaw while his friend busted his teeth out piece by piece with a hammer and chisel.

When I had mine removed the dentist messed up and had to refer me to another person so I had to go through it twice. During the first surgery I woke up, needless to say I wasn't happy about that. The second time everything went fine, but the first guy messed up so bad that when I went to have my second surgery he had to give me another appt. because the first guy messed up so bad that if he would've attempted to operate then it would've done permanet damage to my gums.

It does suck, but drugs help. Hope you don't get dry socket. that is not fun. Oh and little peices of your tooth might fall out of the socket. Sometimes they don't get all of it. It is not all that uncommon.

Most people I've talked to describe how terrible the experience was and how they were sidelined for days afterwards. My sister was really bad, swollen face, migranes, sickness, and whatnot.

Then there's my friend Joe, a unique character to say the least. He had to be restrained during his surgery because he attempted to kill the oral sugeon while he was under. I know you don't belive me, and I didn't believe him either. That is, I didn't believe him until I saw the hospital footage of his crazy self going berserk in the dental chair. He could have really hurt someone, but at least it was funny to watch.

I was walking around getting my own ice packs about twelve hours after the procedure finished, and I was completely ambulatory the next day. I even though about going out to hang with my friends, but the medicine bottle said it was unsafe for me to leave my house. I guess they figured I'd be one step short of a homicidal maniac or something.

My wisdom teeth removal was loads of fun. The doc gave me a good ole valium nap, and when I woke up the nurse asked me: "do you have some sort of musical talent, play an instrument, etc?" to which I said yes, I'm a bass player. she says, "Oh good, cause you were trying to sing while we were splitting your teeth into many pieces so we had to hold your mouth open with clamps. All I could muster was a giggle, I was so drugged up.

So then the next day was a saturday and my school's homecoming and I of course went to the football game. Now theres a picture of the stands at the game with everyone standing up looking intently at a play. You can see me in there standing up, but facing the stands not the field wondeirng what the heck was going on. Extra codine = good :)

A few pieces of advice. Ibuprophen, LOTS of ibuprophen. Ask them if they'll put some in your IV while you're there. I was given 1600mg of it and I never swelled. Next tip, if you dont stop bleeding and run out of gauze, make sure you're drugged up and use teabags instead (I say be drugged so you wont taste the nastiness). Tea has a natural coagulent in it which will stop the bleeding

Ok you want a bad wisdom tooth story...you got one.

So a few years back they decided I needed to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. I go in and I'm awake for the whole thing. They just gave me nitrous. God that stuff made EVERYTHING fine. After 4 hours they finally finish. One of my teeth was actually curled on the bottom like a fishhook so they really had to work to get it out. So they have me pack my mouth full of gozz and all that other fun stuff.
I get me prescription pain killers and yea it hurts and I'm miserable. But that wasn't unexpected.
What was unexpected was how after the first night the pain killers made me sick to my stomach.
Well you don't want to be vomiting when you've just had your teeth pulled - very unsanitary and painful. So I'm told I have to take some meds to make the vomiting stop. But how can I take a pill if I'm just going to throw it back up again???? Thats when they tell me I'm not supposed to take it orally!!! I'll let you guess where it was supposed to go

Please don't all rush to kill me, but I've had mine out for about a year now, and my experience was not painfull at all. I was awake the whole time and I've felt the teeth being extracted (they had to surgicly remove one, you know, break it into little peices and take it out peice by peice). But no pain what so ever, even the days after. The whole time I only took one Loratab and I didn't even need it, I sure did bleed though, yes very messy. I think I've built up a high pain tolarence, well after all I did grow up with two brothers who thought that I was there punching bag and such... But that is just me.

Whole thing was covered, even the drugs.
No swelling yet, just a stiff jaw.

I just had all four of mine out last month. It was a little more difficult than most according to my Oral Surgeon. He had to go in from the sides for the bottom two since they were sideways and impacted.

Actually the worst part was the withdrawal from the painkillers. I was given Percocet which is an Opiate, and I didn't know anything about how my body would become dependent on them in such a short time.

I'm just glad it's over.

Dude! Mine were the same way. Two months ago I had to have all four removed because they were also sideways and impacted, just the bottom two.

And yeah, the worst part is getting off the painkillers.

Dude, my face swelled up like a chipmunk. It was great. Well, not really. My mouth was tender, my painkillers didn't freaking work. It was awful now that I really think about it. I had my bottom ones removed, I didn't have top wisdom teeth, weird. I remember after the surgery I was giggling like I was high. It was awesome. The pain didn't kick in until a few hours. Everything was so slow after I woke up. I swear I looked like a chipmunk.

I forgot that when they were doing the second side the pain stuff wore off and I could feel them braking and ripping out the tooth and it's pieces. I was crying and kinda and trying to speak, but they had my mouth clamped open and could not tell them anything plus I was a bit groggy. Plus, they took a while and my lips got dry and one side cracked and split open to the raw flesh. Then they burned the other side my lip on accident with the cauterize thing they use and it busted open..

Wonderful Air Force doctors.

My wisdom teeth are starting to make my teeth hurt. They are growing, but i dont want them pulled. =(

On a side note, I heard that some people are being born without wisdom teeth. They say its because since we are getting them pulled, its affecting our future children. =/

Oh man, my wisdom teeth. That was an interesting experience. They put me completely under for the operation, because my teeth hadn't actually broken the skin yet. They wanted to get them out before the roots grew, so they had to slice open my gums, yank them out, and sew all four holes up. So sleep was good.

Apparently, after he gave me the sleepy drug in my arm, I stayed awake for about five minutes talking about stuff with my dad, but I don't remember it. When I woke up was the best part.

I saw all black, and there was a teddy bear in the middle, bleeding Skittles (yes the candy). Oh man, it was bizarre! Then, I saw as normally as possible. I could see the nurses and the doctor and the office and stuff. All of a sudden, the entire office turned into a strip club for about five seconds. Then, the whole damn thing became a classroom where they were teaching about video games. Finally, we left. I remember nothing from the walk from the office to the car, we were parked about a block away. My best friend was waiting in the car. He said I sounded like an angry sped when I talked.

And that's my experience. Very bizarre. Did anyone else see things?

I am here to make you feel a bit better, if I can :)

Mine went well, but when I woke up, I was a drooly, tottering mess. The nurses and my mom had to sit on me to prevent me from trying to leave- in my head I felt juuuuusssst fine. The next few days, I crazhed on the couch and didn't move; I sat around holding a bag of frozen peas and carrots to my face and got fed soup, jello, ice cream and pudding. I mean, really.....*blinks*
I kind of miss it, minus having looked like someone force-fed me wads of cotton.

in any case, it hurts like a bitch, but you'll get through it just fine. Just wait 'til one of your dissolving stitches comes out in your food.

I got mine pulled the day before i joined here so yeah. I know dude. It sucks. And it sucks bad! I had all four of mine pulled at 1 o'clock one day, but the good thing for me was that the second morning after I was eating crunchy cereal for breakfast! And that was about 3 weekends ago and I haven't gotten any dry sockets or anything! No swelling, no pain, and eating in less than 48 hours! My friends say that I have Wolverine-like healing capabilities cause I am always getting severly hurt, but healing extremely fast.

But back to you, yeah, it sucks. Get well soon dude.

Why do you need to get your wisdom teeth pulled?

In general:
You don't have to get them removed, it is different for everyone.

For me:
There are two reasons why mine need to come out.

Fist off, there is not enough room in my mouth for the teeth (which are fully grown in). This stems into two different problems. 1) they (the wisdom teeth) are throwing off the alignment of the other teeth in my mouth, and 2) because there is no room, the teeth are actually eating (dissolving) away bone mass from my jaw. As you can imagine, this is not a good thing.

Secondly, my gums have formed halfway over all 4 wisdom teeth. This make it nearly impossible to keep clean. Because of this I have gotten several infections.

Oh you poor people :Þ
wot can i say? the only thing that has ever been wrong with my teeth is the fact that me bro knocked my four front ones out when i was little (slammed me head into the side of the bath) but other than my four front teeth being fillings, ive never needed teeth pulled, bracers or any of that. and my wisdom teeth are commin thru just fine..woo

He was right about some people not being born with wisdom teeth, because for some reason, there are people who don't have them. The reason he heard however, is just retarded.

I only had one, which I find really strange. It had started to come in (this was the top left one) and it fucking hurt. It got infected and I couldn't open my mouth more than like a quarter of an inch. Made it hard to eat.

The dentist I went to just numbed it up and started yanking. I guess the roots weren't that bad. It started to hurt a whole lot and when he wouldn't stop, I shot out a hand and grabbed the front of his pants. That sure as hell got his attention and got me another numbing shot.

The next day we went fishing :). Nothing like speeding over whitecaps in a bass boat just after having a tooth pulled.

Really, though, I didn't have a lot of trouble. I got lucky.

I don't think I was ever told that I had to get them taken out. I know if you ask they will do it. I went ahead and get it done because I would rather not have had them taken out whenever I got out of the service and have to pay for it.

Mine had to come out. As it was, they wrecked my lower teeth into looking all not straight and nasty. Friggin bastards. In a somewhat related experience I had 2 tear glands cauterized out of my eyelids because they became severely infected... When I woke up from that procedure I had the hiccups... And every time I hiccuped, my ecg monitor (pulse) flipped out. Being as drugged as I was that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen at the time. Just then my father walks in, I point at the monitor, hiccup, and giggle and he says "wow, this is gonna be an interesting ride home"
