CaliFur 2007Ok, so this all started out sometime in March I believe; Chris (Sheppy) and Enrique (Nero) decided to pay me a visit here in Yuma. Shep told me about a small convention that takes place the beginning of May each year called CaliFur. Well, turns out its a lot closer than FurCon and it was in the near future. So we all pretty much decided to go right then and there. A few days later I registered for the con and actually got a room at the hotel. It was sweet. A few problems came along the way since I really didn't tell my parents that I was going to a furry convention... it was great that Spider-Man 3 was coming out that same weekend. My parents assumed I went to see it with some friends in Phoenix. lol. Anyhow, with a whole lot of luck... all 4 of us, Chris, Enrique, Brad and myself were able to go. Fortunately, Enrique lives on the way, so me and Brad picked him up and headed on our 4-hour road trip to Costa Mesa, CA. It did take a bit longer than we thought, but we did finally get there around 7pm Friday evening. I got a front row parking spot!!! Woo! Anyhow... the hotel was really nice, I cant complain a bit.
Friday Evening
Pretty much most of the events were already in progress or had already ended, so the only thing to look forward to was the dance. We checked out the room, hotel, and basically tried to meet other furs in general. My god... so many furries in one place... it was a bit strange, but then again, it felt pretty good. Time comes for the dance... we were a bit unprepared, no glow sticks or such, and we were a bit hesitant to go in... there seemed to be a lot of people at the very beginning. But we finally walked in a looked around for a good hour before we actually started dancing. lol. But anyhow, it was a fun night!
Saturday
First off, to the Dealer's Den! Yes there was only a handful of artists but some really cool people were there. Artists such as MDLG, Marci, and White Wolf were there. Getting a badge is basically a requirement when going to a con... so I first got one from Marci in the late morning because Chris' badge came out sweet. Later on we all bought tails. =P OMG, it was like furryness all around 24/7! Its hard to explain until you actually go to a con. Anyhow, I stopped by MDLG's table and chatted with him for a few minutes. This guy is awesome... quiet, but witty. Anyhow, I truly admire his style so I purchased a badge from him as well. He was a bit booked up and I was going to be one of the last badge commissions he was going to do for the con; so I was totally excited.
Oh Oh!! We went to lunch at In-n-Out Burger.... with our tails on! We were sitting in the car debating whether we should do it or not; and we were like... hell, there's 4 of us, why not? So there we proudly stroll into the In-n-Out pretending as if nothing. Oh did I mention we all had collars on and we were all wearing our Con Badges (the ones needed to get into the con). It was pretty great indeed. I did overhear one lady say in Spanish, "look, they all grew tails." LMAO!!  But yeah... One guy that sat next to us asked if we worked at PetsMart. lol. We of course said no and we were attending a furry convention. He had no idea what it was, so we enlightened him on the greatness of the furry fandom and he was actually quite intrigued by the whole thing. We were quite satisfied that we put the fandom in good light to this guy that had no idea what it was. It's a shame everyone couldn't get our view about the fandom rather than from a hater. So we ate our delicious burgers and left just as we entered. turning a few head, but noting bad at all. Its quite a good feeling being part of a small group that's different.
The Dealer's Den was like a magnet for some reason, we kept going back over and over again... lol. Maybe it was all the fabulous art we could see at our leisure. Oh, Another great story! Chris and Brad were kind of... pole dancing... outside. lol. There's pics in the album. No it wasn't actual pole dancing, just kind of swinging around a light pole when we were kinda bored at the moment. The greatest thing happened and I still curse myself that I didn't have my camera ready... but this one suiter, FarRaptor snuck up behind Brad and gave him a little upward push on the bum while he was hanging off the pole. OMG, I almost pissed myself when I saw his reaction! It was like one of those extremely surprised, caught your hand in the cookie jar as a little kid kinda look. FarRaptor just motioned him to climb up the pole and continue dancing... It was great! Brad still swears that he's gonna get him back somehow at FurCon next year.
The Fursuit parade... we kinda missed the beginning. We were off buying glow sticks and got held up in traffic... But I did manage to get a good video inside. Well other than that there's nothing that was outstandingly great... The dance was better than Friday night's. We had our glow sticks and we were set. The guy in the video swinging the purple and green glow sticks was Chris. I did eventually get my own string and spin around my red and green ones. It a lot more fun than you might think.
Well, a lot happened and dancing for hours really wears you out... sleep?
Sunday
We started out the morning/afternoon by heading over to Red Robin Gormet Burgers for an early lunch. Two of Chris' friends came along to make a group of 6 of us. We all wore our tails and we actually got a cool waitress. Once again we were able to pass on a good message about the fandom to someone! Well, we ate, paid, and left proudly showing off our badges and tails to everyone we passed by.
Well, I finally got my badge by MDLG and that is the one I use right now as my avatar! I was blown away... so I bought a print from him and 2 of his books. It was the last day and I still had some cash, so why not spend it on great things.
