Why I'm NOT going to RTX... (And a quickie Star Trek review)Sup gang! I've been meaning to do a proper life update here, and I have some important things to say, so here it goes.
A couple months ago I broke up with the woman I'd been courting for almost 5 years. It was not my choice, it was extremely painful, and I've decided now that it was a good thing for both of us. But in the time that followed I really did a lot of soul searching. A big break-up offers a chance to re-evaluate one's identity, and determine what is a part of you and what was a part of the failed relationship.
To analyze what was what went wrong, and what you can do differently in the future. Although it was a point of contention, I've decided that I am a dedicated gamer and nerd culture enthusiast, and that this is what God really wants me to be. I fill a certain niche in my church and I'm proud of it. I have really been built to reach a certain group of people, and I want to grow my relationships with people here as much as I can. Don't worry, I'm not going to go preaching in the forums. My point is that I care about all of you, and I want to know you better.
That being said, my initial desire to go to RTX this year was not entirely out of good intentions. In the pain of the break-up I really wanted to get away. I wanted to say "Screw everything!", blow a bunch of money and have a good time. But after things have calmed down I see that this was really foolish. I have limited resources and a number of other important goals I'd like to accomplish this summer, things like a new YouTube show and more writing. I'm still super pumped about
RTMN this coming weekend, and I still plan on being around a lot more, just not in Texas.
So thank you to everyone for trying to help me finds rooms and make it down there (Specifically
@Newbs,
@Lauroux, and
@Zack), but I will instead be investing in other awesome stuff that I can share with you all.
Now, onto less serious things...
Star Trek Into Darkness really has me torn. The pure, unbiased professional movie critic in me says it did everything right. Great action, witty banter, plot twists, etc. But the Star Trek fan in me is really upset about a couple of things.
RED! FREAKING! SPOILER ALERT!!! First off, Benedict Cumberbatch is goddamn Kahn. Now I'm fine with having that character be here and a lot of his scenes were really great, but by his very presence we know exactly was is going to happen. Someone is going to die, someone else is going to scream, and none of it is going to be as good as it was the last time around. And that is exactly what happened. The only change is that Kirk dies an Spock goes to avenge him, instead of the other way around like in ST:TRoK. I really liked seeing Kirk learning a lesson about taking responsibility for his crew and sacrificing himself for them(every ST movie and show should have these kinds of lessons), but then seeing Spock completely break character and deliver a line that is only famous BECAUSE IT WAS BAD! was gut-wrenchingly painful. This scene felt rushed and really could have been done better. And in the end it was all for nothing because they bring Kirk back to life not 15 minutes later anyways. They took away the impact that the old version had, and left in the part that didn't work. That and a few other "What the heck?" moments really threw me off. One that really bugged me was the obligatory Girl-Takes-Her-Clothes-Off moment that was completely unnecessary and didn't even make sense. It was just there for the trailer. This honestly seems to be the only reason Alice Eve's character was brought in, as her first role was misleading, and then her actual specialty was never used. It was a serious waste of a great actress.
So that's what's bugging me. To summarize, it's a great movie with a few things that might really bug you. Please sound off in the comments below, and thanks for reading this far. Can't wait to share the rest of this summer with you all.
