i is italic
u is underline
s is ~~strikethrough~~
link is a URL (you have to use link=http://... in the first tag)
img is an

(in this case, the image URL is placed between the tags. so you have [tag]URL[/tag]
spoiler blocks out certain text, so a user has to highlight the text to read it
quote adds a

quote box

around the text.
color= allows text to be certain colors, if you are a sponsor.

Lastly, there are smileys, numbered 0-24. but the tags aren't closed. it is simply smiley0 in brackets.

The Featured User is simply any user hand picked by the staff to be shown off on the site's front page. The Featured User changes everyday. As for comments, you got it just right. =]

Here's a friendly tip, Megan. When you want to reply to a comment, go to the other person's profile and post your reply there. They will get an alert and know you responded. Replying on your own page doesn't alert anyone.

As for forum symbols... The splats are stickies, threads that remain on the top of the page.

The other two rectangles signify an unread thread, or a read thread. When the rectangle is filled, you aven't read it. When the rectangle is blank, you've read it.
