InterviewHad an actual sit down interview (nearly 3 hours total with 4 different people in the company) yesterday with a fairly large construction company as an entry level project manager. I think it went very well, all the job responsibilities they mentioned are things that I am real comfortable doing, they would just be on a much larger scale. I had to sign a bunch of paper work so they could do background checks and contact my references. Dollars were not discussed and they didn't make an offer, said they would call in a few days. It is about a 45 minute drive one way, which is different from the 20 minute drive I have been making. The biggest negative is that it is a typical 7:30 - 6:30 day (with hour for lunch), then the drive home. That cuts into family time with the wife and kid, it will need to be big $'s.

A break from the bad journalsRan second 5K of the season. 25:39 (shaved a minute off last months time, which was 3 minutes faster than last year) Finished 11th overall out of 140 runners/ walkers and 4th in my age group. So glad these were planned before my work situation. Unemployment - week 5To be honest, I didn't think I would be doing these this long. Cast my net a little bigger yesterday, drove almost an hour to get to Ashland and dropped by 3 architectural firms and 1 big builders office. Hated to go that far, but if there is interest and I can get the money right I may have to do it. My biggest problem with working that far from home is 2 fold. My wife already works an hour from home and with the boy starting school in the fall I hate for us both to be that far away. I would need to wake him up earlier and drop him with a sitter to take him to school. Those are problems I will worry about after finding a job. I could probably find work quicker by straying from my field, but I am going to wait to do that. The money would probably be la lot less and I hate to think I wasted my degree and 12 years of experience, but the experience can applied elsewhere I guess. My wife got a vacation club check and our taxes came in, so that should help things float for a little while. In the meantime, I am enjoying the extra time with the boy.

Unemployment - week 3Home Show over the weekend was a bust, talked to several builders but none are hiring as of now. Went on a quick trip into Charleston this week with several addresses of engineering firms and construction companies, bringing along resumes to hand out. Hand 2 sit downs (not sure I would call them interviews), but not sure either will pan out. I will give them a call back next week to see where it stands. Keeping my head up and trying to not get frustrated, I am getting to spend some quality time with my boy. Next week I plan on stopping by a few architectural firms and some more engineering outfits.

Unemployment - week 2Had an interview @ a kitchen design place this week, but haven't heard back yet. Getting ready to have a stack of resumes and business cards printed, I am heading to a Home Show tomorrow to shake some hands and hopefully get some more leads. The good news of the week is that the wife wasn't let go from the hospital, they cut 70 employees and 4 from her department, not sure how we would have handled both of us being out of a job.

Unemployment - week 1Last week I was let go from a position I held for the last 5 years and 11 of the last 12 (I took a different job for about a year). I knew business was slowing down, but never saw this coming. I have put together a short list potential next stops, but it's been very stressful. In 18 years of work experience, I've only worked for 3 companies, I don't do change. There is more shit going on, but gonna let things shake out first.
