My 1st JournalI've been debating with myself about what I should write about in my first journal. I've had many ideas running through my head and I think I've settled on a topic. I just finished my first year of college, where I'm getting a Music Theory/Compostion degree. Ultimately I am planning to become a composer for video games. Now one doesn't just wake up one morning and decide to compose music for video games, obviously there is a reason behind choosing such a risky career choice, so here is the story behind the madness.
I come from a pretty musical family. My mom is a choral director at the middle school level and also a piano teacher. While I was playing a video game (Xenosaga if I remember correctly) downstairs, she came down after giving her last piano lesson for the day when she asked me "You know, you should really figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life." That's definitely not one of the things you want to think about while playing, right? Regardless I decided, during one of the cutscenes to give it some thought. I love music and I was always involved with band and choir in high school. I had also just started composing music. Another thing that I really liked was computers and video games. Anytime I could play, I did. I just liked the way a game reacts with what you do. I knew I wanted to do something with music and computers/video games, but I didn't know what I could do that had both. All of a sudden, a huge orchestral piece started playing from my TV. I looked up at the screen to see the cutscene of the video game that I was playing. All of a sudden I realized that my dream job had been staring at me in the face for the past 20 minutes and I told myself, this is what I want to do.
It's been 5 years since that day and I still feel that way today, but it's so much more than that. It's not only my dream job, but it's exactly the answer my mom was looking for. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Composing music is something that will never get old for me, and video games, no matter how old I get, I'll still be playing. I want to be a video game composer for the rest of my life.

I'm not much of a gamer myself, but it's obvious you have a great passion.
Best of luck!
