A comment on piracyPiracy, the word used to only bring to mind images of men with way too many belt buckles and wicked beards but there has been a change. Recently the one of the founders of The Pirate Bay wrote in an article that we should "Spread and participate in culture. Remix, reuse, use, abuse. Make sure no one controls your mind. Create new systems and technology that circumvent the corruption." Pretty romantic, right?
The truth is that piracy is wrong and really I could give a shit less about the music industry, or movies I want to mention exclusively games. But why is pirating games bad? One reason, quality. When a company looses a billion dollars to piracy it just means that in order to feed their kids they have to crank out more games to make the same profit. Now I'll go ahead and mention that there are exceptions to the rule (i.e. Call of Duty, MMO's, ect.) that no matter how shitty they are they will be bought, I'm talking on the individual scale is where the impact of piracy is felt the most. The game industry isn't full of rock stars of A-list actors and for the most part they get paid a hourly wage just like you or I. So then imagine someone who comes in place where you work, and steals the very product you are working on right from under your very nose. It's just one right, what could it harm? But that's the problem, it's never just one person it's thousands if not tens of thousands that repeatedly steal the same product almost simultaneously.
Eventually the company will have to do one of two things, either shut down due to bankruptcy or cut wages and hours thus affect quality of games. So in a round about way if you pirate games you then have no right to bitch about how lame they have become. Let me wrap it up by saying that I am not completely innocent here because I, like most of us who use the internet, have pirated software and music. But after doing a little digging you will soon see that by pirating games you are hurting something that you clam to love.
