Pretteh MathSo, after posting that fractal broccoli the other week, I started to want to find a way to render one. I had been hearing a lot about Mandelbulber, a program that allows you to create and render 3D fractals (forms that, when drawn, have bits that repeat themselves at different scales). The other day I downloaded that to check it out and was presented with this beast:

This is the Mandelbulb, a spherical-coordinate analogue (basically a 3D version) of the Mandelbrot set. I'll save you guys the math blah on that thing because it's complex (pun intended) and not really relevant to the journal. It's a fractal and it looks like this:

Anyway, I tried to fiddle with some fractals, but it just doesn't look like the program does iterative spirals that could be used to make the pattern on the broccoli. So I decided just to fly around the Mandelbulb a little bit to see what I could see...

(click for bigger!)

Yeah, I don't think I'll miss the broccoli too much.

Also, just as a side note: The renderer in the program doesn't have antialiasing, which means that all of the edges and details are sort of jagged, not smooth, so to make that picture I actually rendered it much bigger (16x the area), blurred it a little in Photoshop, and shrunk it down to wallpaper size. I still ran into a problem with the details getting smaller than the pixels (that's fractals for you) so there's a bit of banding in some really finely-detailed areas. Hopefully I'll be able to find ways around that in the future =)

For interested peeps, here's the full-size picture (linked for HOLY CRAP BIG). If you start going all end-of-2001 after looking at that, don't blame me. Blame the math =P
