I Truly AM Blessed...About 3 years ago I went through a series of 3 surgeries to my neck and back. I had taken a bad spill in India, while there on business, and broke the fusion that had been put into my neck. When I returned to the US, I had to have MRI's of my neck and back. The obvious was the break in my neck, but the MRI showed a disease that is really a silent time bomb. I had AVM from T2 to T8 around my spine. An AVM is an Arteriovenous Malformation, and if it had ruptured I would have been paralyzed. I was reading an article today about a new reality show called "Push Girls". It's 4 girls in wheel chairs who have pushed through their handicapped to excel in their lives. But as I was reading the story of one of the girls, Mia Schaikewitz, I literally stopped in my tracks. Here is the excerpt:
Mia Schaikewitz, 32, wasn’t a professionally trained dancer before her spinal cord injury (caused by an arteriovenous malformation rupture at age 15)
Once again, I realized how very lucky I was/am. She sounds like her life is full and she is very happy, but for me, in that moment I thought, wow that could have been me, I AM BLESSED.
Here is the link to one of the articles I found on her: newmobility.com/articleView.cfm?id=11826
I'm really not trying to sound melodramatic...just one of those Ah Ha! moments.
Maybe it's time to take life up a notch :) Challenge Accepted!

I'd already heard about this show and I think it shows promise. I hope it's on a channel that I receive.
I work at our local hospital, and we see patients come in with cerebral AVMs fairly regularly. I never get to see the patients since I'm more of an administrative person, but the people I admit are typically young and are almost always admitted to a neurosurgeon in our Surgical ICU. I know the onset is pretty sudden (as you said they really are silent time bombs), and is often very serious/detrimental since they can result in internal hemorrhages.
While I'm sorry that you had to go through the back surgery and everything, I'm so glad they were able to catch that!
I'm glad you're ok :)
