MarathonToday I ran my first marathon. Here is an account of what happened.
Pre-Race: I got there pretty early, wanted to beat traffic. It was about 40 degrees. I really should've brought a sweatshirt, dumb. I find my corral (starting place) easy enough, do a lot of stretching. As people file in, I find myself in the middle of crowd 50,000 strong. As starttime nears, I'm anxious, but I don't want to brea...the too deeply out of fear that I'll breathe on someone.
Start: Eye of Tiger begins blaring. It's on.
Miles 1-8: Pretty smooth sailing, I've run distances of this length plenty of times, I get past the first couple of big hills alright, try to take it slow. I'm impressed by the amount of live music being played, plus the amount of supporters everywhere on the route. The atmosphere is really fun, and so far everyone running is in good spirits.
Miles 9-14 Still doing pretty good, hit the half-marathon mark around two hours. Couple of things of note. 1. A volunteer helping keep traffic off the road is very enthusiastic. Saying things like "Run! And be awesome!" I like him. 2. I think a coworker of mine shouts my name, I reply, but I'm not certain.
Miles 15-18: Doing okay I actually feel better at this point than my 20 mile run. But something looms ahead.
Mile 19: I meet somebody named Mr. Wall, who apparently has the sole purpose in life to make me feel terrible...also to make me think about all my shortcomings.
Mile 20: "Okay" I say to myself if I can get past here I can make to 21 I'll be alright. A fellow (faster) runner touches my shoulder, and tells me to continue. It makes me feel better.
Mile 21-25 : Second wind! AND BEAST MODE IS ON! At this point, whenever I approach a decent amount of supporters I start waving my arms to get them to cheer louder, they comply and it gets me to mile 25.
Mile 26: But...wha? Who put a HILL there? Jerks.
Mile 26.2: I turn the corner to see the finish line. I see crowds of people on either side. BEAST MODE RETURNS! Despite being exhausted, I sprint towards the finish, high fiving people along the way.
Post Race: My body feels terrible, but I can't stop smiling I can't stop looking at my medal for finishing. Strangers are congratulating each other, it's an incredible feeling.
