Light Birds and Fat CatsIn case you were not aware American Airlines is the first and currently only airline in the entire world to be certified to fly their routes with an iPad as opposed to paper charts. There is one simple reason for this:
* An iPad weighs around 1.5 pounds.
The average weight of the paper documents and maps the iPad replaces is about about 35 pounds per * aircraft.

Currently the 777 fleet is the only part of American that is now paperless but in the not to distant future their entire fleet will be.

Currently the 777 fleet is the only part of American that is now paperless but in the not to distant future their entire fleet will be.
The paper airspace map seen above the iPad is one of what could be 50 carried for that flight. The other paper not shown includes airport maps, terminal maps, frequency lists, arrival and departure procedures plus all of the documents associated with the aircraft itself.
Now taking this plus the fact that American just went out and replaced almost their entire fleet for brand new aircraft leads to one conclusion.
