      Your CD!

The game here is to make a CD of 15 songs that you would send to someone so they could get to know you better. List away, and see how amusing it is to match music to your life!

      1. Mi Vida Loca -Pam Tillis
~If there was a song to sum up my life... ^_~
      2. Little Wing -Def Leppard
      ~This would be me. ^_^
      3. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia -Reba Macintire
~If anyone ever screwed with my brother, this would be their fate. I, however, would be far more careful to make sure Shane wouldn't take the fall for me.
      4. Feathery Wings -Voltaire
~My life has been spent trying to make people feel better about themselves. I don't know if I'd ever get my feathery wings, but it's just...something I do.
      5. Land of Confusion -Disturbed
~(I know there's a Phil Collins one, too.) This is the world. This is my view of the world. We can Fracking fix it, if we'd take the damn time to.
      6. Shine Down -Godsmack
~There aren't many songs I've ever heard that touch the way I feel about my choice of religion.
      7. Until It Sleeps -Metallica
~There are times when I want to explode. Sometimes, things claw at my throat and try to escape, and all I can do is swallow with poor grace.
      8. All I Want is a Life -Tim McGraw
~Honestly? I never wanted fame. I just wanted a life I could look back on and say I enjoyed.
      9. It's My Life -Bon Jovi (*facepalm* At least Kizzy found the right artist, because gods know, I sure couldn't!)
~I hate to be controlled. HATE. IT. Manipulated, commanded... You name it, I resent it.
      10. Stand Beside Me -Jo Dee Messina
~This is my belief, my desire for relationships.
      11. Crash and Burn -Savage Garden
~You know how people have lots of 'fair weather' friends? Yeah. I'm not one of those.
      12. In the End -Linkin Park
~Sometimes, it feels like all the struggle isn't worth anything. Especially when it doesn't change a damn thing.
      13. Believe -Staind
~And then again, all I do is wish and hope. I think I was made for chasing dreams.
      14. Save Me -Royal Bliss
~I think, that even if I am designed and built by the gods to guard and protect, that I've always wanted to be rescued.
      15. As the World Falls Down -David Bowie
~This is what I promise the ones I love, and what I deliver as often as I can.

Hail To Thee, Dungeon Master Gygax!!!!!

Gary Gygax died today. *bows head* To the man who gave gamer geeks like us a place to stand, jokes to make and stories to tell, eternal thanks and love. Roll a d20 for the man who made Dungeons & Dragons, and gave all of us a reason to love/hate things no one else could understand, like 'NPC' and 'AC,' or an eternal favorite, the old 'THAC0'. HERE'S TO YOU, GARY!!!

      Good Gods Above, I Live!

That's right, I'm actually alive! *thud* Not that it's been an easy few months. *snerk* But... Considering that I don't have internet at my house *snerk* and that I'm now living on my own (Yay!) I actually might be able to spend more time on here! Woot for me! *snuggles 'round* Sorry I've been dead to the world! I promise to stalk post and sneak around later this week!

      Home & Alive

Just a quick note (on a borrowed computer, no less. *snerk, pats GW_Darkwolf*) to let everyone know that I'm alive. (Assuming you're the type of person who cares. ^_^) I'll be working on getting the right connector cord for my monitor-CPU in order to get my damn computer fully functional. Might take a couple of days, but hopefully I'll have everything up and running. (And seeing as how I have my D&D books here {YAY!} I'll be able to finish my silly cleric. ^_~ Peace out!

      Eragon

Well, for all of the anticipation...I admit to feeling a bit let down. (Don't worry: for those of you who haven't seen it and are wishing to, and haven't read the books, I'm not slapping a spoiler entry up. Read fearlessly.)

Perhaps it's simply because I have such high expectations of fantasy in general...I expect any fantasy book, story, television show, movie, etc, etc to really make me feel taken apart from the world. I look to fantasy as the magic which is ignored in the world, and in all truth 'Eragon' couldn't pull me out of the theatre and into the film itself.

One of the difficulties may lie in the fact that I adore Anne McCaffrey, and a lot of 'Eragon' smacked of the Dragonriders of Pern. (Telepathy? Dragon dying with the rider? That sound familiar to anyone? If you've read Dragonquest it really should.) I'm sensitive to the idea of authors' rights to their creations, and while it's impossible to be truly original, taking such obvious cues from such a prominent author speaks of an inability on the copycat's part to put their own interpretation on their ideas or the subject in general. So that did not help.

Saphira was, without a doubt, very cool. She was well animated, very expressive, and the feathers in lieu of the traditional batlike dragon wings was very interesting. Rachel Weisz as her voice...that felt a bit tacked on. I can't quite explain why her voice didn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just because I'm so touchy about voices and sound in general. *shrug* I'm probably just being picky. (It's what I'm good at.)

I think the majority of the problem is I've fallen out of love with high fantasy. While the idea of a medieval-age land with eleves, dragons and wizards is awesomely cool...it just doesn't inspire me to look wonderingly at the sky. I think I've jumped to Charles de Lint and Neil Gaiman's side of the fantasy fence. Urban fantasy is now the key, now the thing that I think is going to be the driving force of the fantasy genre. While Tolkien's style of tale will never truly die (as it is an epic archetypal tale, and human beings love those), I think the search for the fantastical in a gritty urban alley is becoming more interesting. D&D is a ton of fun, and there's nothing quite like dungeon crawling, but it's so much more thrilling to imagine hunting a mage in the streets of downtown Boston, dealing with the mundane you see every day as well as treading into the realm of the impossible.

Or I'm simply spouting off because the whole movie felt trite to me, and I've fallen more and more in love with urban fantasy. (I'm an opinionated English major. Nothing I say here should really be taken too seriously.)

      Amusing?

Amusing is certainly the way to classify yesterday. Between sitting at the computer and laughing at my own idiocy to laughing at the idiocy of others, it was a laugh riot.

      Examples such as:

-going to a 'classy' Christmas lunch with the elections office, being seated behind another office party and watching the reactions of the employees when they opened their 'Christmas bonus' to find they'd all been given steel thermoses.

-going to a county tax office party and watching a security guard sneak behind the refreshment table and count the chocolate chip cookies every time someone picked one up and walked away.

-signing the guest book six different times with six different role-playing character names (Brandenburg was out en force!)

-watching a judge hit on a tax office clerk and get turned down

-riding a motorcycle through a red light, right past a sheriff getting into his cruiser.

-watching your brother explain just why he couldn't stop for the light to the sheriff, who's winking at you because he remembers you from early voting

-weaving through traffic on the interstate on said motorcycle and watching your brother try to not get you killed and shut his vibrating cell phone off at the same time

-pulling up to find a tractor idling in the wheat field with the driver slumped over at the wheel

-spending fifteen minutes honking and debating if the guy just fell over and died or not.

-spending five minutes arguing about who had to go over and poke the body to see if the guy's actually dead

-watching your brother's 7' tall friend get tangled in a barbed wire fence, lope across the field and climb up a tractor to find out the guy was just stone drunk

-dashing into the house while listening to your brother curse because the drunk tractor driver took out the pasture fence

...yeah. A highly amusing day. People were parading out to demonstrate every aspect of human stupidity possible. I love the holidays. ^_^ (Did I mention watching a mother at Wal-Mart being very careful to put her packages in her car, then forgetting her kid was still in the cart when she got into her minivan? That was hilarious.)

      Wistful Thinking

You know, it seems like I really graduated college FAR too soon. First the English 211 class on gamer speak and online lingo was offered a semester after I graduated, and now Thomas Harris writes Hannibal Rising. Considering I did a paper on Thomas Harris in high school that I've been aching to rewrite for years now, this would be the PERFECT time to pull out a thesis. *wistful sigh* I'm tempted to rewrite the paper regardless of academic purpose or not, simply because I really adore the character Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

I'll refrain from the long-winded explanations as to why I adore him, but I highly recommend Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal to anyone interested in a little abnormal psychology, serial killers, and becoming sympathetic with the antagonist. (And so help me, if I catch a post referring to Hannibal Lecter as "evil," I'll go ballistic. READ THE DEFINITION OF EVIL, PEOPLE!!!! HE is not evil. His actions can be considered so, if one tends to judge against Judeo-Christian standards.)

I'm going a-hunting for Hannibal Rising as soon as I possibly can. (i.e. tonight) If anyone else likes Thomas Harris, or has read his first novel Black Sunday, I'd really appreciate hearing commentary! *

      * Please note this refers to intelligent, coherent thoughts on Thomas Harris the man, the works or the characters contained within. Refrain from commenting on film, acting or casting choices. If your comment demonstrates a lack of thought, be warned: you will be mocked.
