      I was at a 7-11 this morning...

...and was browsing the magazines and saw the latest Guitar World featured the Foo Fighters on the cover.

Sweet. They've got a new album. Sounds great. Buuuut...

All I could think of while looking at Dave Grohl's face there was how I felt I'd seen it before...

      It just came to me.

      First Impressions

When I joined this site in 2007 and started interacting with the community, I started noticing who was posting where, and which groups communicated mostly with whom. After a few weeks I had decided a few things:

ChurchesWife* and Daruma were definitely the most popular people here, hands down.
Mattiecore and Bey were totally an item.
I could never decide if FinchLynch was really cool, or really a dick.
RvBTO was a silly idea, and meeting people from the internet was not recommended.*
ad_713, while super cute, was kind of a bitch.
Jengaship was very well spoken, incredibly intelligent, and could do anything.
If you're new, do not enter the music BAR.
Actually, just do not enter the music BAR without invitation, ever.

Aside from one or two things (*), I like how incredibly well my first impressions of you guys ring true today. smiley8.gif

      Eating habits.

Last night I had a home-cooked dinner consisting of steak with grilled onions, scalloped potatoes, and lightly boiled broccoli.

One year ago I would never touch three of these four things.

On a related note, I never really make serious New Years resolutions, but I have one this year that I've stuck to well so far: try one new food every month. I ate shrimp in January, and zucchini last weekend.

Overall since the beginning of 2010, I now eat shrimp, zucchini, potatoes (mashed, scalloped, fried, sweet, etc.), broccoli, apples, oranges, and onion.

Slowly but surely, I'm bettering myself.

      Bacon.

      Yes, Bacon.
From March until June, Denny's (perhaps your local Denny's. I don't really know, but MY Denny's for sure) will be holding a promotion focusing entirely on bacon.

      Seven dishes centered around it.
      SEVEN. BACON. DISHES.

      smiley9.gif Pepper Bacon and Eggs
      smiley9.gif Bacon Flapjacks
      smiley9.gif Triple Bacon Sampler
      smiley9.gif Ultimate Bacon Breakfast
      smiley9.gif BBBLT Sandwich
      smiley9.gif Bacon Meatloaf

And, perhaps surprisingly, my most anticipated dish...

      smiley9.gif Maple Bacon Sundae

      Fucking what?
      Maple? Bacon? AND ICE CREAM!?

I am going to be super fat in the months to come.

      Feels good, man.

      Today I worked from 11am until 10pm.
I waited tables from 11a to 5:30p, took a half hour break, and cooked from 6p-10p.

From the moment I got in the door, the place was bustling. The other servers mentioned it had been busy since 8 o'clock, and showed no signs of stopping. This is a good thing because I need the money. To make a long story short, Things really didn't slow down until 5. In those six hours, I made nearly $100 in tips. Compared to other days lately where I've made half that in a nine-hour shift, this made me quite happy.

During the rush it started snowing pretty steadily, and the more it snowed, the less business we got. This worked out great for me, as I still had 4 hours of cooking ahead of me. Here's where this journal's title comes into play. I was cooking alongside one of the top two cooks in our restaurant, and she needed a break. My manager, Mike, came to cook with me while she took her 30 minutes, and things picked up a little. I apparently was really in the zone, because I was running circles around him; dropping food in the fryer on one end, flipping eggs on the other, stepping to the middle to cook the burgers, etc. I was doing three or four things for every one or two from him. Mike is by no means a bad cook. You really can't be if you're in management. So to be so efficiently working around him and doing (from my perspective) so much better than him, just boosted my confidence back there SO much. He told me to slow down and stay to one side and just tell him what I needed. Basically, I was in control the whole time he was back there.

      I liked that a lot.

Then later, Elisa (the main cook) was back from break, and we got hit with the dinner/Saturday-night-kids-eat-free rush. We had about 6 or 7 tickets we were working on, and three in a stack we couldn't yet get to. Usually this is the time when I start getting overwhelmed and stressed out, thus causing me to do worse and worse as my temper rises. Luckily (no doubt in part due to the good mood I was in), I kept my cool really well and did better than I ever have. I was reading the tickets quickly, making no mistakes about special orders, and getting things cooked in the proper order so nobody was waiting long. Elisa had her end (fryer and pancakes), I had my end (eggs, sandwiches, calling the tickets), and we both worked the middle (burgers, toast). Afterward, when Elisa and I were clocking out, she told me I am one of her favorite people to work with on the cooks line.

Mind you, I only started cooking a less than half a year ago, and after my training they stopped scheduling me to cook for two months. I only started up again regularly last weekend, and just got back into the swing of things.

So there you go. I don't intend on working at Denny's my whole life, but it feels good to know I'm doing so well, by not only my own standards, but by others as well.

      Feels real good.
