      bye Austin

what a fantastic week in Austin! I hardly remembered after 3 years of not going there that it's one of my favorite cities ever, from a climate point of view up there with Lisbon...
I tried something Texas has become known for throughout the world: waterboarding. However, my phone did not survive the practice and is now somewhere on the bottom of the river. My friend rang it and the only sign from the night river was a bunch of bubbles: she said it was still ringing...

One more thing all visitors to Austin should check out: the new trend of gourmet trailer restaurants. The G'raj Mahal is an excellent Indian backyard only blocks from the Convention Center!

back to Austin on Saturday - after more than three years. I cannot wait!!
The occasion is the INFORMS conference where we present some of our work, not about Machinima this time. However, I'll be presenting Machinima and our freshly published research involving RT on Nov 30 in Mannheim, Germany, let me know if you're there.

      Machinima surgery?

I held a talk at Copenhagen Business School about our research on Machinima last week and I showed them an episode of Reconstruction. They were impressed. Then, someone asked about where else gamers could take their knowledge and set up shop (as in addition to the film business - using games to shoot film). A passionate discussion started and some wild ideas surfaced. The best I thought was that surgeons might use game engines for distant operations on patients.
Then someone asked if the surgeon needs to be a gamer. Also, one professor asked if Machinimators aren't really film people who happen to stumble across games - I said probably not but lots of expertise needed, in fact most Machinima companies have at least one experienced film person on board. She made some cool observations about how the integration of knowledge about film and about games could happen before Machinima is actually being produced.
I just hope that doctors aren't too enthusiastic about using Halo for operations. Except maybe plastic surgeons as it's all about blowing stuff up.

We're watching the latest RT videos here in Bolzano, Italy, at Manifesta7, a contemporary art show where etoy built an installation inside our all-new 40ft cargo container. Check us out via livecam - that is if you're up early... we're at UTC+1

      Bonus Content DVD

I watched the RvB Bonus Content DVD which finally made it to Switzerland - and I was very happy to find our interviews in the Command section! Go watch it. All our students will have to watch it next fall - as part of the Machinima section of the course, and as a fantastic example of ventures in virtual worlds!

      The Lab

This week the XBox360 Halo3 edition arrived in our office. I'm sure we're one of the first university departments with gaming equipment. We call it The Gaming Innovation Research Lab (GIRL) - hm, maybe I come up with a smarter name at some point. A side effect is that I have to bypass the cue of graduate students before I can reach my office.

paper (aka The Report) out now

We have just posted our manuscript on Machinima. I have mentioned this before, now it's public. It still needs a lot of work before publication but we'll present it at a couple of conferences this summer: EURAM Ljubljana on May 15, 2008 / User Innovation Boston on August 5 / AoM Anaheim on August 11 2008.

The history goes like that. Pretty exactly one year ago I had the great honor to visit Roosterteeth in Austin and enjoyed a week of fun and excellent conversations about Machinima and the business of producing and distributing movies made in games! Later on my co-auhors and i met and talked to a few other Machinimators in the US and the UK and came up with what we thought can explain how companies in this area enter the moving picture industry in a very smart and efficient way. The paper explains in detail how this works.

Your feedback is VERYVERY welcome! smiley12.gif

      Seville

I presented some of our research on Machinima at a research center of the European Commission today in Seville, Spain. They were all interested (=puzzled) by Machinima even though they laughed hard at the RvB videos I showed them. After my disclaimer about adult language they took it quite well. Imagine close to 200 researchers who write policy reports about social computing... in a futuristic building in southern Europe. What a fun assignment to give them a training on innovation models!

Hey, did you attend the 2009 meeting?

I ask, because, had I known about it, I would have been happy to give you a tour and buy you a drink.

      Ah, lovely Anaheim.

Are you and your colleagues going to have an opportunity for any tourist activities? Or are you guys going strictly for the conference?

@BigVig: we're presenting our paper in August at the Academy of Management meeting and we presented it two weeks ago at EURAM. First we incorporate the feedback from the conference participants, then we will submit in fall: not sure where yet.
